A recent study is saying that LDL cholesterol is a poor risk marker for heart disease. Dr. Martin has been saying this for years, and it appears that more studies are starting to say the same thing.

The study goes on to say that the triglyceride HDL ratio, which is used as a marker of insulin resistance, is actually a good risk marker for heart disease. Dr. Martin has been consistent in saying how cholesterol doesn’t cause heart disease but triglycerides do.

Join Dr. Martin as he talks about the dangers of triglycerides in today’s episode.

Birth control pills have been around a long time. When something's been around for a long time like that, researchers have a chance to study it and its side effects over a long period of time.

Birth control pills are in fact drugs. A lot of young girls are put on birth control, not so much for birth control, but because they have bad periods. Research is showing how this sets up these girls for a lifetime of health problems.

Join Dr. Martin as he teaches about hormones in today's episode, and looks at the many side effects of birth control pills.

The television series The Biggest Loser ran for 17 seasons. It’s being reported that most of the winning contestants have gained all their weight back. Dr. Martin explains why it happened in today’s episode.

Nearly all diets use a caloric deficit for losing weight. They want you to eat less and move more. Almost all the participants felt like they were being starved. They failed to keep the weight off because their relationship with food was never fixed.

Dr. Martin says that weight loss is more about your relationship to food than to the scale. Learning to eat the proper foods and avoiding harmful ones is much more important than burning calories like with The Biggest Loser.

Dr. Martin looks at 3 remarkable studies on memory, specifically on how to restore and protect your memories. From making sure you have optimal levels of vitamin D and DHA, to doing proper exercises, you won’t want to miss the findings from these studies!

If you remember from biology class, there are two primary centres in our brains called the hippocampus and the hypothalamus. The hippocampus is your memory centre, while the hypothalamus handles the regulation of your hormones.

What’s remarkable about these studies is they’re showing that the hippocampus can be regenerated. Old memories can be restored and protected!

Dr. Martin continues his teaching on mental health, focusing today on the role cortisol plays.

If you remember from previous teachings, cortisol is a stress hormone. When cortisol is continually secreted, it can mess up body functions from your brain to your toes if it goes on for any length of time.

In Dr. Martin’s opinion, depression is a perfect storm. One of the keys to that storm is the secretion of cortisol. Depression never just shows up one day. It’s the result of cortisol being continually secreted because of stress.

When it comes to depression and anxiety, we don't realize how bad things really are. Statistics from 2021 are showing that a quarter of the US population over 18 years are on prescription meds for mental health!

Doctors wrote an astonishing 300 million prescriptions for antidepressants, and another 70 million for patients with ADHD.

Dr. Martin teaches about the cause of depression and anxiety in today’s episode and discusses alternatives to prescription drugs. Getting to the root cause of why someone is depressed or anxious is the first step.

We don’t really think of our hearts unless something is going wrong. We actually take for granted the hundred thousand times our hearts beat in a day!

Our heart is a muscle, and the best thing we can do for our heart is to strengthen it. New research is showing how being a cardio bunny isn’t the best exercise to make your heart strong. Dr. Martin isn’t against cardio, he used to jog all the time, but there’s a better way.

Back in the 70’s, there was only one type of major liver problem and that was cirrhosis of the liver caused by alcohol. Today, you may have heard of non-alcoholic fatty liver, or NAFL for short. It’s a very dangerous condition that Dr. Martin thinks needs a new name. Fructose fatty liver is better because it describes the cause of the condition… fructose!

Join Dr. Martin as he teaches on fructose fatty liver and why it’s so dangerous to your health. If you have fructose fatty liver, you have problems. Dr. Martin shares ways to correct the condition in today’s episode.

In North America, 70% of the population has some form of sleep disorder. Dr. Martin isn’t talking about sleep apnea, but instead the micronutrients people lack for a good sleep. Proper levels of melatonin is important for a good night’s sleep.

Dr. Martin isn’t a fan of supplementing with melatonin, but instead wants you to get out in the sun. Letting sunlight into your eyes is one of the best ways of creating melatonin. But even better, when you’re eating properly, melatonin is produced from your food.

Join Dr. Martin as he explains how getting the proper micronutrients can increase melatonin levels and improve your sleep!

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your health. Any movement is good. Walking, biking, swimming… whatever you like, it's all good. But there’s an exercise that’s best. Resistant exercises, lifting weights, is the best exercise you can do for your health!

Resistant exercises build muscle, and this is especially important for the health of your liver. Our muscles act like bins for storing excess fat. The larger your muscles, the more storage you have, and the less your body has to depend on your liver for storage.

This is especially important for women. A study out of the British Medical Journal has shown that resistant exercise reduces breast cancer by 41%. That’s significant and it confirms what Dr. Martin tells his patients… to get strong!

There’s reports of a new strain of antibiotic resistant E. coli that’s been found in chicken. We all know to make sure chicken is fully cooked before eating, but that doesn’t always prevent the transfer of bacteria.

The overuse of antibiotics has contributed to the creation of superbugs found mostly in hospitals. We live in a different world now, but Dr. Martin says there’s hope and it comes in the form of a broad spectrum probiotic.

Join us in today’s episode to learn more reasons why Dr. Martin loves probiotics!

Dr. Martin has spoken before about the importance of fatty acids. This study is making a pretty significant statement as to why omega-3s are important, and especially for heart disease and dementia.

Join Dr. Martin as he discusses the dangers of low omega-3 and the impact it could have on your health!

Sep 19, 2022

Dr. Martin recently read an article that reviewed a study on nutrition coming out of Stanford. The headline said that half the world is starving while the other half is trying to lose weight. This statement would actually be comical if it weren’t so sad!

The study has concluded that nutrition is not about how much you eat, but instead what you eat. Dr. Martin agrees with this as he’s always said it’s not about calories. It’s about the quality of the fuel you’re putting in your mouth.

Join Dr. Martin as he reviews this study in today’s episode.

Sep 16, 2022

Dr. Martin shares two new studies on processed foods and diets in today’s episode.

The British Journal of Medicine, a very prestigious journal, has published that ultra processed foods are very detrimental to your health. The study followed 200,000 people and came to the conclusion that regular consumption of processed foods is linked to cancer and early death.

The second study is showing how sugar disrupts the microbiome by eliminating protection against obesity and diabetes. Regularly consuming sugar sets off a cascade of problems with the friendly bacteria found in your gut.

One thing that Dr. Martin talks about, and will always talk about as long as he’s living, is the dangers of sugar. It always boils down to the food we eat, and these studies further prove that!

Metabolic syndrome is the most serious condition that nobody's ever heard about – and that’s despite the fact that 93% of the population is now affected by it!

Dr. Martin has had physician’s eyes glaze over when he’s talked to them about metabolic syndrome, as if they really didn't know what he was talking about. Doctors are trained to look for certain symptoms when diagnosing disease, but they don’t look at nutrition.

Join Dr. Martin as he teaches on metabolic syndrome and why it is a fat storing problem.

Sep 12, 2022

Two important studies were recently published about protein and about water. Dr. Martin has always said that protein is king of the castle when it comes to nutrition. He has also said how only water is water when it comes to hydration.

It turns out that protein is necessary to keep water and sodium inside your blood vessels. This is what a study out of Washington is saying. The other study is showing how water is necessary to burn fat. Being sufficiently hydrated helps to metabolize fat better.

Join Dr. Martin in today’s episode as he explains why these two studies are so important.

Sep 9, 2022

Glutathione is important for your liver. At the Martin Clinic, we have a saying that glutathione is like Velcro for your liver. It’s the master detoxer that removes harmful toxins from our bodies.

The problem for most of the population is that we don’t make enough glutathione. Our livers are so gummed up from the sugars and crappy carbs we consume. What we’re told is ‘healthy eating’ doesn’t match up with what our bodies actually need.

Join Dr. Martin as he talks about detoxing your liver and how to naturally make more glutathione in today’s episode.

Sep 8, 2022

We all know what stress is. There isn’t anyone that doesn’t experience stress. The problem is when our stress is prolonged, it becomes dangerous to our bodies.

When we are stressed, our adrenals produce cortisol. Cortisol is fine in the short-term, but it’s the constant drip, drip, drip over a long period of time that is very damaging. Too much cortisol affects all parts of our bodies.

Join Dr. Martin as he teaches on the connection between stress and low levels of testosterone in men and progesterone in women.
