It was Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, who said, “All disease begins in the gut,” nearly 2500 years ago. He was onto something, because many metabolic, autoimmune, and cognitive diseases share one thing in common… a leaky gut.

Dr. Martin discusses two studies in today’s podcast that show the dangers of gut permeability. He explains how there’s an invisible war going on in your gut. We have a thin lining of epithelial cells in the gut, and when this barrier is gone, excess permeability is caused… which is leaky gut!

Dr. Martin discusses several health headlines that magnify how metabolically unwell we are. From the top sources of calories in the US diet, to researchers now knowing what causes cold sores, to the importance of lowering triglycerides… they are all connected! 

Nearly all foods now contain high-fructose corn syrup, which causes insulin to elevate, which in turn causes our cortisol levels to rise. High cortisol levels is what causes the herpes virus to be activated, causing cold sores or shingles. When we have too much insulin circulating, harmful triglycerides are formed in the bloodstream. This is dangerous to our heart and brain!

The bottom line is that metabolic syndrome all has to do with food!

Dr. Martin also shares two health headlines about the amazing benefits of vitamin D when it comes to fending off COVID-19 and preventing breast cancer. It’s sunshine that we all need as 80% of the population is deficient in vitamin D!

A recent headline from the FDA recommends the daily dose of sugar is 50 grams. One teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams, so that’s over 12 teaspoons of sugar! Any sugar in our bloodstream is toxic and our bodies know this.

Dr. Martin connects this headline to the father of modern medicine, Canadian physician Sir William Osler (1849-1919). Osler revolutionized the way in which medical education was taught during his tenure at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

He was the first physician to identify the cause of gout as that of high absorption of sugar and fructose, not because of red meat. Even in the 1800s, doctors knew that sugar played a role in many of our diseases!

Dr. Martin also discusses a second headline, “Stop Eating After Sunset.” The benefits of not eating after dinner include decreases in fat mass, blood pressure, triglycerides, and oxidative damage, as well as a decline of inflammation. Start a good habit, and stop eating at night!

Dr. Martin goes over a recent study showing that heart and brain health go together. The study shows a direct correlation between cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. The same things causing heart disease are the same things that cause Alzheimer’s.

In the United States and Canada, the number one killer is heart disease, followed closely by cancer. Alzheimer’s disease is now the number three killer. In the United Kingdom, Alzheimer’s is number one!

It’s metabolic syndrome that connects cardiovascular disease to cognitive decline. Your heart, brain, liver, pancreas… they are all connected… and finally science is agreeing with what Dr. Martin has been saying for years!

Dr. Martin also looks at a study showing that microplastics are being found in the placenta! This shocking study shows that environmental factors like plastics are affecting us more than we realize!

Dr. Martin discusses some recent studies he found interesting. He looks at studies showing a connection between loneliness and cancer, how fructose causes inflammation in the brain, studies on vitamin D and K2… and even a study on how coffee can be a fat buster!

There have been a lot of unintended consequences with COVID-19. One of them is the diagnosing of cancer has been delayed for many. Another consequence is loneliness. When we are lonely, our bodies are stressed. When we are stressed, our bodies create cortisol and this can affect our immune system. 

Dr. Martin also talks about the dangers of inflammation in our brains, and how high fructose corn syrup is contributing to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidization of the hippocampus; our memory centre of the brain. He cautions those who are metabolically unwell to especially avoid sugar.

Dr. Martin shares his favourite tests to determine if you are metabolically unwell. When requesting a blood test from your doctor, be sure to ask for testing of the following:

  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin B12
  • C-reactive protein (CRP) 
  • Triglycerides
  • HDL cholesterol
  • Fasting glucose or A1C
  • Fibrinogen
  • Homocysteine

Into today’s episode, Dr. Martin explains each test and shares the optimal range you should be in. He explains that many of the tests are not routine, so you need to ask your doctor.

He continues to stress the importance of vitamin D and shares how doctors got it wrong, saying cholesterol is a bad thing!

In today’s episode, Dr. Martin talks about the true vitamin E… exercise... and how resistance training is by far the best exercise you can do for your body!

He discusses senescent cells and how they act similarly to free radicals. Senescent cells don’t die off and eventually start damaging healthy cells. This process accelerates aging! Dr. Martin talks about how exercise slows down this aging process.

He also discusses how having more muscle will help you live longer. Studies have shown that we lose 3 to 8 percent of our muscle mass each decade. For someone who reaches their 80s, potentially 50% of their muscle mass is lost!

Dr. Martin talks about a recent CDC headline that states, “Over 300 toxic chemicals are now routinely found in human blood samples.” Over 300!

We now live in a “toxic soup” and there’s no getting around that. From pesticides, to herbicides, to plastics, to heavy metals… from the moment we are conceived until we die, our bodies are under attack.

However... there is some good news!!

There’s something our liver makes that should be called ‘The World’s Number One Velcro,’ and that’s glutathione! It acts as a secondary filter to take toxins out of our blood… and essentially acts like Velcro.

But, here’s the catch… because of all the carbs and PUFAs we consume, resulting in a fatty liver, not enough glutathione is being made. This is a major problem.
