Dr. Martin often talks about kingdoms of food, and the animal kingdom is definitely the one he speaks of the most. When you’re eating primarily from the plant kingdom, you run the risk of developing oxalates, glass-like crystals that can cause you trouble.

A new study on magnesium citrate is showing how it can get rid of oxalates. This is good news, but Dr. Martin says changing your diet is the better answer.

Dairy intolerance is a lot more common nowadays, but why is that? It never used to be so prevalent.

Dr. Martin suggests that the problem is not with dairy itself, but with the individual's gut health. The pasteurization and homogenization of milk, along with the overuse of antibiotics, have led to a decrease in beneficial gut bacteria, leading to dairy intolerance.

When you regularly don’t get enough sleep, you’re increasing your risk of getting Alzheimer’s. That’s what researchers out of Edinburgh, Scotland learned after following 8,000 participants for 25 years. They found that those who sleep less than six hours a night had a 30% increase in Alzheimer's by the time they were 70.

Dr. Martin shares two new studies about the importance of sleep for overall health, and particularly in relation to Alzheimer's and aging. He shares tips on making sure you’re getting between 6 and 8 hours of sleep regularly.

Dr. Martin has always encouraged listeners to get strong, and especially when you’re older. As we age, we are more susceptible to sarcopenia which is the wasting of muscle. 

According to a new study, you have a 2.4 times greater risk of dementia if sarcopenia is present. Muscle and brain have a big connection and this is even more true with older adults.

Dr. Martin also looks at a second study about the link between fructose and Alzheimer's in today’s episode!

Did you know it only takes one month of eating sugar and crappy carbohydrates to start the process of creating a fatty liver? Thankfully, on the flip side, you can also empty your liver in 6 days if you stop eating sugar and crappy carbs.

Dr. Martin shares a Canadian study from University of British Columbia that has found obesity and high insulin are linked to pancreatic cancer. Since cancer cells have 200 times more receptors for glucose than normal cells, it’s no wonder that sugar fuels cancer!

A new study out of Oregon State is saying that DHA is a fat that fights fat. They discovered that 1000 mg of DHA taken daily blocked the progression of fatty liver and lowered triglycerides. Dr. Martin says this is an amazing discovery.

The Food & Drug Administration in the United States has just approved the claim that fish oil can reduce the risk of high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. It’s very rare that the FDA gives a positive statement about natural products, and Dr. Martin says he never expected to hear this in his lifetime!

A new study is saying that when you choose to go to sleep matters. Melatonin is what helps put you to sleep and it turns out that the greatest amount is secreted between 10 pm and 2 am. Dr. Martin says it’s reason enough to stop being a night owl and go to sleep!

Dr. Martin looks at a 6-year study on the importance of B12 and homocysteine in relation to heart disease. The study is showing that inflammation and high homocysteine levels are more significant factors than cholesterol.

When you are low in vitamin B12 there are a whole host of symptoms you can encounter, and according to this study, high levels of homocysteine is one of them.

It was Ancel Keys who first presented the theory that cholesterol causes heart disease. His theory turned LDL cholesterol into the bad guy and went on to become the common belief since the mid-1950s.

Statin drugs do what they say they do and lower LDL cholesterol, but Dr. Martin asks why you’d want to do that? Cholesterol is essential to our body’s functioning and it turns out that lowering your LDL comes with consequences.
