An interesting finding published in the American Journal of Psychiatry from a Dutch cohort study. In diagnosing major depressive disorder, three things are measured, and this study is saying that the number one characteristic is insulin resistance!

Dr. Martin says this is earth shattering blockbuster news. The study looked at 200 subjects, focusing more on men, and each one of them having depression were also exhibiting insulin resistance.

Join Dr. Martin in today’s episode as he further unpacks this study!

It’s being reported that when you have low levels of vitamin D, you also have low levels of glutathione. Dr. Martin says this is concerning because 80% of the population is deficient in vitamin D!

If you remember from previous episodes, glutathione is like Velcro and is created in the liver. Its job is to literally take the garbage out of your body. When you have low levels of glutathione you’re opening the door to autoimmune diseases like Parkinson’s.

Join Dr. Martin as he teaches how glutathione is created and why having optimized levels of vitamin D is so important!

A new study is showing that having high blood pressure between the ages of 35 and 44 is linked to smaller brain sizes later on in life. The findings mean you’re more susceptible to getting Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other autoimmune disorders.

Today’s episode is all about blood pressure. Dr. Martin teaches about the systolic and diastolic numbers that make up your blood pressure. He also shares the ranges for normal blood pressure, prehypertension, and for hypertension.

Blood supply is really important and Dr. Martin shares what you can do to ensure your brain stays healthy!

Oct 22, 2021

Dr. Martin shares some history on probiotics and how his recommendation for patients has changed over the last 40 years. What we knew about probiotics back in the 70s compared to now, there's really no comparison.

Dr. Martin also teaches on the different strains of probiotics and why it’s so important to have a broad spectrum of bacteria. To be classified as ‘broad spectrum’ a probiotic must have 10 different strains of bacteria.

Listen to today’s episode to learn how our Probiotic Complex is ideally suited to your gut!

Oct 21, 2021

Dr. Martin discusses over the counter medications and their effect on your microbiome. We often take these medications, usually for pain, with no regard for their side effects. In fact, 300,000 visits to the ER take place each year for serious side effects from these medications!

Despite the serious damage non-steroidal anti-inflammatories can cause to the liver and kidneys, most people don’t realize they also cause damage to their gut. They actually are very damaging to the lining of your gut because they kill your good bacteria!

Don’t miss this informative episode where Dr. Martin breaks down the long term effects of using over the counter meds.

Oct 19, 2021

October is breast cancer awareness month. When Dr. Martin graduated in 1974, one in every 20 women in North America would get breast cancer. Today, that number is 1 in every 6 women!

Dr. Martin agrees that we need to be more aware of breast cancer. Cancer starts as the size of a pen tip, and it takes 5 years to get that size. Our healthcare system is all about early detection, when it really needs to be about prevention – what to do to prevent cancer in the first place!

In today’s episode, Dr. Martin answers a question about eliminating tumours in breast tissue. He teaches about the trifecta that makes tumours grow... estrogen, insulin, cortisol, and how getting those under control can literally save your life!

Oct 18, 2021

Dr. Martin shares a 12 week study that’s showing inflammation was reduced by 30% when taking probiotics. A really interesting study that used C-reactive protein (CRP) testing to determine inflammation levels in participants.

Inflammation damages blood vessels primarily, but it also affects the brain. More studies are referencing the gut-brain axis and the importance of having healthy bacteria – why everyone needs to be taking probiotics!

In today’s episode, Dr. Martin also goes over 10 things to keep doing if you want to get Alzheimer’s. Nobody wants to get Alzheimer’s, but if you keep doing these things, your risk goes up dramatically!

Oct 15, 2021

Dr. Martin answers a few more questions from last Friday’s Q&A in today’s episode:

  • Is krill oil good for you?
  • What’s the best kind of fasting?
  • Are carbonated beverages bad for you?

Don’t miss Dr. Martin’s in-depth answers to these questions!

Oct 14, 2021

In the last episode, Dr. Martin didn’t get to all the questions and wanted to answer another asking how to prevent a brain aneurysm. Dr. Martin groups the question with how to prevent a stroke as both conditions have to do with your blood vessels.

Dr. Martin goes over an anatomical chart that lists what can put you at risk of aneurysm or stroke. High blood pressure, heart disease, and hardening of arteries, all put you at risk. You want to keep your blood vessels healthy, which means keeping them open and without damage.

A lot of people have damage in their blood vessels, and they don't even know it. The best way to have healthy blood vessels is to change your diet. Although the concept is simple, it’s not going to be easy but it will be worth it.

The selling of sickness is big business! From big pharma to big food, if you’ve been watching for the last 18 months, you know how much these large companies influence our society.

Dr. Martin shares a study that followed three groups of people for 6 years. The participants were placed in the different groups based on their metabolic biomarkers. The healthiest group, not a single person developed a chronic disease. The third “unhealthy” group had significantly higher rates of cancer, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and stroke.

The study serves to show the importance of optimizing your metabolic biomarkers, something Dr. Martin has been teaching for years!

Oct 11, 2021

Did you know that 50 to 60% of North Americans have a non-alcoholic fatty liver? Your body would rather have a fatty liver than high blood sugar or diabetes.

Dr. Martin looks at a study showing that Alzheimer's may begin in the liver. They discovered that in the presence of a fatty liver, toxic proteins were released and made their way through the bloodstream into the brain. This created inflammation in the brain and caused damage.

Dr. Martin uses this study to talk about the importance of detoxing your liver.

It’s becoming evident how out of touch oncology departments are when it comes to giving nutrition advice to cancer patients. Most doctors know very little about nutrition, and many still don’t see the correlation between food and disease.

In Northern Ontario, the major cancer centre is located in Sudbury. Nurses working in the oncology department used to give Dr. Martin’s Perfect Smoothie recipe to patients who had no appetite. The hospital got wind of this and put a stop to it. They in turn created their own info sheet to be given to patients when they left the hospital.

Dr. Martin discusses the 12 nutrition myths they came up with in today’s episode. From consuming sugar to low-carb diets, to juicing and probiotics, it’s unfortunate how many misconceptions are still prevalent today!

Oct 5, 2021

In a previous episode, Dr. Martin encouraged listeners not to ditch dairy, but instead to switch it. He’s never been a fan of grocery store milk. They’ve denatured it, removing the fat and making it too sweet. He wants you instead to be eating cheese and butter.

Dr. Martin shares a study looking at the connection between dairy and cardiovascular disease. The researchers thought they were going to find that dairy clogs up your arteries... but they found the opposite! Dairy fat actually diminishes your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Martin also talks about the importance of vitamin K2. Don’t miss part two of this discussion!

Oct 4, 2021

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid that you have. It’s actually called L-glutamine and its purpose is to help repair the gut.

In today’s episode, Dr. Martin talks about several reasons that L-glutamine is important for your gut. The study that came out is showing 5 things that L-glutamine does.

One thing it does is stop dysbiosis, which is the invasion of the third army in your gut. It builds up your good army to prevent yeast, fungus and candida from thriving. This is the reason why Dr. Martin likes bone broth, because it’s packed with L-glutamine.

Listen in as Dr. Martin goes over the 4 other benefits of glutamine.

Oct 1, 2021

Dr. Martin breaks down an interesting study about neurogenesis, which is the regeneration of neurons, the nerve cells in your brain. The key factor in regenerating your brain is something called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, or BDNF. It’s essentially a gauge for how much regenerative power you have.

The study shared 4 specific things you can do to increase your BDNF. Implementing exercise, the real vitamin E, was one of them. Researchers were able to increase the BDNF of elderly individuals at high risk for Alzheimer's and dementia by 1800% just by getting them to exercise!

Don’t miss today’s episode to learn the other items, and two more that Dr. Martin suggests.

Sep 30, 2021

Dr. Martin shares a troubling headline that’s saying obesity has doubled since 2018 in the United States. The biggest headline continues to be the virus, but that's not killing the most people, not even by a long shot. Obesity kills 2.8 million people a year in the US!

We have an unhealthy obsession with processed foods! Bad oils, crappy carbs and sugars all contribute to metabolic disease. We really need to break up with these bad foods. Dr. Martin admits breaking up is hard to do, but we need to do it – our lives depend on it!

Don’t miss this eye-opening episode!

Sep 28, 2021

Dr. Martin shares a small study showing how Alzheimer’s was reversed in patients. Not just stopped, but reversed! What’s encouraging is the study didn’t look at genetics, but instead at lifestyle. They looked at Alzheimer's the way it should be, as a metabolic disease.

Many people think that Alzheimer’s is simply aging of the brain, when it’s really not that at all. It’s a neurodegenerative disease, and this study is showing how lifestyle changes can dramatically affect its progression.

Dr. Martin unpacks the study in today’s episode. He shares the changes they made resulting in this breakthrough discovery!

Sep 27, 2021

According to Dr. Martin, there is not an organ more misdiagnosed than the thyroid gland. Your thyroid controls your metabolism, like the gas pedal in your car, but it never acts independently on its own. It’s subject to a lot of things going on in your body.

A recent study is showing that your thyroid will not work properly without proper levels of selenium or iodine. The study has prompted Dr. Martin to talk about the causes of a sluggish thyroid. He brings up 17 unexplained symptoms that could point to a sluggish thyroid.

Don’t miss today’s informative episode!

Sep 24, 2021

A study published in July in the Journal of Neurology is showing how cancer slowed down rapidly when sugar and carbs were eliminated from the diet. The research was done by a cancer biologist studying aggressive brain and spinal cord cancer.

Dr. Martin shares how we are all battling cancer on a daily basis. It takes 5 years for cancer to grow to the size of a pen tip, but what accelerates that growth is sugar! Cancer needs fuel to grow, and sugars and carbs cause it to, “grow, grow, grow,” as Dr. Martin says.

What we need to do is cut out the carbs and the sugars and DIM out your estrogen. DIM is short for diindolylmethane and it helps balance estrogen levels in your body. You're never going to get away from estrogen, but Dr. Martin shares ways to reduce your exposure to it.
